Exam Prep

Once your application is approved by the Florida DBPR, you’ll be eligible to take the required licensing exams through Pearson VUE. For most certified contractor licenses in Florida (Residential, Building, or General), there are three separate exams, all of which must be passed to qualify for licensure.

The required exams are:

1. Business and Finance

2. Contract Administration

3. Project Management

These are open book, computer-based exams and must be taken at an approved Pearson VUE testing center.

1. Business and Finance
Covers business operations and financial management. Topics include accounting, contracts, insurance, labor laws, lien laws, and estimating. This exam is required for all license types.

2. Contract Administration
Focuses on the legal and administrative aspects of running construction projects. Topics include interpreting contract documents, project supervision, permitting, and managing subcontractors. This exam measures your ability to manage the legal structure and operations of a job.

3. Project Management
Tests your understanding of scheduling, cost control, materials management, safety regulations, inspections, and workflow on active job sites. This exam ensures you can effectively plan and execute construction projects from start to finish.

Exam Format

• Each exam is multiple-choice and computer-based

• Open book, but only approved reference books are allowed

• Timed: typically 4.5-6.5 hours per exam (varies per license)

• Taken at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers across Florida

Passing Score
You must score at least 70% on each individual exam to pass.

Scheduling Exams
Once approved by DBPR, you’ll receive eligibility instructions to schedule exams at www.pearsonvue.com. Exams can be taken all in one day or spread across multiple days.

Exam Fees
Each exam costs $135 to Register with the DBPR and $80 for Pearson Vue once approved to test.

Next Step
Once you pass all three exams, you’ll be eligible to activate your license and legally operate as a certified contractor in Florida.
